Abandoned Vehicles
North Dorset District Council are working together with the police to deal with abandoned vehicles as speedily as possible. We need your help to locate them, cars can be abandoned for a long time before anyone tells us where they are. If you wish to bring a suspected abandoned vehicle to the Council’s attention, it is helpful for you to inform us where the vehicle is, its registration number, colour, make, condition, how long it has been there, and if it is taxed. The vehicle will be assessed by a Council Officer, and if considered abandoned, will be removed as soon as is reasonably practical. Disposal of your own car
If you have a car you no longer want, it is up to you to dispose of it properly. It is against the law to abandon a vehicle (Refuse Disposal Amenity Act 1978) and if convicted can cost up to £2,500 or 3 months in prison.
Contact a local authorized vehicle breaker who will remove your unwanted vehicle, most local companies make no charge for this service.
Dorset County Council, in partnership with Dorset Police and the Fire and Rescue Service, is launching an amnesty for people with old or unwanted vehicles on their hands. Owners can take advantage of a free collection service. See Dorset for You Dispose of your unwanted car for free page
