Affordable Housing
Rented Homes
The type of social rented housing offered in the district is a range of houses, flats and bungalows. Some of the flats and bungalows have special facilities for the elderly including access to an emergency alarm system and visiting warden. There are also some homes that have facilities that make them more suitable for people with disabilities.
The size of the homes include bed-sits, 1, 2, 3, and 4 bed homes BUT there is not a presence of all types in all areas. An indication of the distribution can be seen here - Housing Stock Distribution.
Availability
The size of the affordable housing stock is relatively small and not all house types are represented in all locations. There is very little new build in the District therefore the opportunity to allocate homes usually only arises when an existing tenant leaves a home. It is therefore impossible to answer the frequent question - ‘How long will I have to wait?’ because no-one in the Housing Team or Housing Association can say when an existing tenant is going to give up their tenancy.
As at April 2007 the most frequently available properties are elderly persons flats, 1 and 2 bedroom flats. 3 bedroom houses are available infrequently, and 4 bedroom properties are extremely scarce. More detailed information showing the type of affordable housing stock that have become available can be found here - Relet Vacancies. Please note that this data is factual and shows past availability. It can only be used as a guide for future trends, but does illustrate the limited amount of social rented homes that have become available.
