Licence to Deal In Game
The Gaming Act 1831 requires game dealers to be licensed in England; the Game Licences Act 1860 extends the provisions relating to the sale of game to Wales and Scotland.
A game dealer is a person who buys and sells game whether by wholesale or retail.
Game as defined in the 1831 Act as:
- Hares
- Pheasants
- Partridges
- Grouse
- Heath or Moor Game
- Black game
The Game Licences Act 1860 extended the definition of Game to include:
- Woodcock
- Snipe
- Rabbit
- Deer
The sale of venison is also covered by separate legislation under the Deer Act 1991 (England and Wales)
Two licences are required to trade in certain game species
- A Council licence to sell Game (shop/premises) can be obtained from the local authority. By applying in writing to the Licensing Department.
- An Excise licence to kill is obtained from the post office at a cost of £4.00.
Council licences expire on 30th June each year.
