Gender Equality
In March 2007 the Council prepared a Gender Equality Action Plan. The plan should
be read in conjunction with the Council’s Comprehensive Diversity and Race Equality Scheme which is
the principal document setting out the Council’s commitment to equality. The council recognises that
there are crossovers between issues of gender and other strands of diversity.
The Gender Equality Action Plan has been developed following consultation with our
staff and stakeholder groups. Under the statutory duty which came into force on 6 April 2007, local
authorities are legally required to have due regard to the need to:
- Eliminate discrimination and harassment
- Promote equality
of opportunity between men and women
The Duty also aims to ensure that men and women can receive services that meet their
needs more closely.
The action plan sets out how the Council will promote equality and eliminate discrimination
and will be reviewed annually.
