Equality and Diversity

Recognising Difference

“Building strong, inclusive and sustainable communities

(Corporate Plan 2008 – 2013)

“An equal society protects and promotes equal, real freedom and substantive opportunity to live in the ways people value and would choose, so that everyone can flourish.  An equal society recognises people’s different needs, situations and goals, and removes the barriers that limit what people can do and can be.”

('Fairness and Freedom: The Final Report of The Equalities Review', February 2007)

As our society becomes more diverse, understanding and appreciating difference has become an increasingly important issue. Through our attitudes and actions each of us has an impact on other people.  We can limit what people can do and be, or we can enhance the life chances of others, valuing our differences and helping all of us to reach our potential.  Equality means that no one in our society should be excluded from having fair chances and opportunities.

North Dorset District Council is committed to promoting Equality and Diversity. We will ensure that our policies, procedures, services and facilities encourage the inclusion of all individuals and groups within our communities and enable all of us to contribute effectively.
