Lower Winterborne Parish Council

(covering Winterborne Kingston, Winterborne Zelston, Winterborne Tomson, Anderson and Huish)

The Parish and its Amenities

The Parish of Lower Winterborne consists of Winterborne Kingston, Winterborne Muston, Winterborne Tomson, Anderson, Winterborne Zelston and Huish, situated mainly along the valley of the River Winterborne and covering an area of 1,813 hectares or 4,480 acres. The Parish is located approximately two miles north east of Bere Regis and six and a half miles south-south east from Blandford. Winterborne Kingston, the largest village, stands at the point where the Roman road from Sarum (Salisbury) to Durnovaria (Dorchester) crosses the river Winterborne.

The Parish contains 364 houses with a population of approximately 833 (2001 census). Its amenities include 2 village halls, 2 public houses and 4 churches. Some parts of the church at Winterborne Kingston are believed to be as old as the 12th century, the one at Winterborne Zelston was rebuilt in the1860s but kept its 15th century tower, while that at Tomson, is a single-cell Norman church with an apsidal east end (the only Norman apse in Dorset), unaltered in plan since it was built in the early 12th century and a favourite of Thomas Hardy.

In Winterborne Kingston there is also The Dunbury CE VC First School (primary school), Winterbornes Nursery school, a recreation ground and a play area, a farm supplies and clothing shop, a specialist car workshop and a Post Office service operates from the village hall twice a week.  Near Winterborne Zelston there is a petrol filling station and shop and a Little Chef restaurant as well as a few small businesses.
