Health and Safety
Either the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or local authority will be responsible for health and safety enforcement. This depends on the main activity undertaken by a business. In general the Health and Safety Executive inspects premises such as factories, mines, fairgrounds and farms. Councils have the responsibility for catering, leisure, offices, residential care, retail and wholesale businesses.
The 1974 Health and safety at Work act places general duties on all employers to protect the health and safety of their employees and other who may be affected by their work activities.
The following publication is an introduction to health and safety for small businesses. This may be a starting point for you when starting a new business or reviewing your health and safety arrangements.
