Temporary Event Notices (TENs)

These notices allow small scale, temporary events of which licensable activities form part, to take place without the need for a premises licence or club premises certificate.  The event organiser (who must be over 18 years old) has to notify the licensing authority, by giving a “temporary event notice” (TEN).  There are certain limitations imposed on this system.  These include:

  • No more than 499 people (including staff/organisers) attending at any one time
  • A limit of 12 temporary event notices may be given in respect of any one particular premises in a calendar year
  • An event may last for no longer than 96 hours
  • The maximum aggregate duration of the periods covered by temporary event notices at any individual premises of 15 days
  • There must be at least 24 hours between events

Personal Licence holders may issue up to 50 temporary event notices per year for events at premises with no licence or premises holding a licence that does not cover planned activities.

Non-personal licence holders may issue up to five temporary event notices per year without the need for a personal licence

If your requirements are greater, you will need to apply for a premises licence.

Early notice should be given of major events to allow the responsible authorities to discuss operating schedules with the organisers well before a formal application is received.  A minimum of 10 working days is required to process a Temporary Event Notice.

More information can be found regarding TEN’s by following the link http://www.culture.gov.uk/alcohol_and_entertainment/

For events in Sturminster Newton, Stalbridge and Marnhull the TEN shoudl be sent to:

A minimum of 10 working days notice is required for a TEN application although we recommend that 28 days notice be given to allow for the possibility of changes to be made in the event of Police concerns being raised.

Please note the Temporary Event Notice form has to be sent to the Local Authority where the event is taking place.
