Shaftesbury Abbey Interpreted
Project Description
Shaftesbury Abbey was the first female community not to be affiliated to a male
community. It was the largest and most important nunnery in England. This project aims to
improve the interpretation of the history of the Abbey and make the site more accessible for all through
new audio and visual interpretation and educational provision. The funding provided enabled the
Abbey to purchase interpretation panels, an interactive display, audio interpretation and educational
provision.

Amount Awarded
£10,355 which represented 20% of the total cost of the project
Amount Levered
£63,459 which included funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Dorset County Council
and volunteer time.
Performance Indicators
This project contributes to the number of signage/interpretation points improved,
number of volunteers involved in countryside management activities.
