Get Active

Get Active is a project about giving people the opportunity to be physically active close to where they live. One of the tools we have produced to help us do this is a Get Active leaflet aimed at information sharing. It has been produced in conjunction with North Dorset Primary Care Trust to raise awareness around physical activity in rural areas.

The work so far has centred around Milton Abbas and the surrounding parishes, with the overall aim to get people more active. The Get Active leaflet is for all ages and caters for everyone no matter what your current physical condition. As well as the leaflet we have also recently set up two new activities based at the Reading Rooms in Milton Abbas (see below for details) that are proving to be very popular.

Tap Dancing

There are two classes, one for beginners and one for more advanced dancers. This is a great way to stay trim and enjoy yourself at the same time.

Venue: Milton Abbas Reading Rooms

Date: Every Thursday

Time: Beginners – 6.30 – 7.30pm

           Advanced – 7.30 – 8.30pm

Cost: £3.00 per session ( First session FREE to see if you like it!!!)

Gentle Stretch & Tone

An activity that provides all the benefits of aerobics at a more manageable pace. Sessions are led by a trained instructor.

Venue: Milton Abbas Reading Rooms

Date: Every Monday

Time: 1.30 – 2.30pm

Cost: £3.00 per session

Contact Jilly Spencer (instructor) on 01258 881114

For more information on the above activities contact Val Lamb at Milton Abbas Surgery on 01258 882010.

Inactivity is the most prevalent risk factor for heart disease with 70% of women and 60% of men in the UK not being active enough to achieve health benefits from physical activity.

Try a new activity or start after a period of absence, try something as a family, with friends, or go it alone and make new friends. It doesn’t matter as long as you make the decision to become more active and feel the benefits of taking part.
