Health Walks in North Dorset

Regular walks led by volunteer health walk leaders are run every week throughout the area to help you establish a routine. These free walks offer a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air and meet new people.

There is no need to book, just turn up on the day. Newcomers are always welcome and are asked to complete a short registration form before their first walk.

The short definition of a health walk is: "a purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis" and it can include any walk which is specifically designed and carried out for the purpose of improving an individual's health.

It is the relative intensity of the walk for the individual and the regularity of participation that can really have an impact on heart health. With regard to cardiovascular health, the walk should be purposeful and 'brisk' (in other words more than just a stroll). Organised walks (brisk or not) can have a health impact on individuals by providing an opportunity to socialise (good social networks enhance health) and a distraction from everyday stresses (stress contributes to poor health).

Stalbridge Walkers

Part of the Walking for Health Initiative, the first of the group’s regular walks took place on Thursday November 15th 2007, and are continuing to attract walkers on a regular basis.

The walks start at 10.30 each Thursday, from outside the Library in the Station Road Car Park. They last for approximately one hour, and are intended to encourage physical activity at a level which can be maintained. They  provide a good social atmosphere to promote physical and mental well-being, and are at a pace to suit everyone. They attract walkers from surrounding areas, whilst also venturing outside Stalbridge on a regular basis, giving a change of scenery and slightly more challenging walks.

For those who prefer to walk alone, or for shorter periods, there are now Self-Led Walks Packs available from the Stalbridge Community Office, Stalbridge Surgery and the Library. These packs are free, and have been funded by the National Lottery, with a grant from the ‘Awards for All’ Scheme.

More information on the walks is available on the Stalbridge Surgery website or the Town Council website.

Regular brisk walking has a number of positive effects here are just a few:

  • Keeps your heart strong
  • Reduces the risk of Coronary Heart Disease
  • Makes you feel good
  • It’s a chance to be sociable walk with your friends
  • Opportunities to enjoy the countryside
  • Helps you sleep better
  • Reduces stress
  • Helps with weight control
  • Improves the strength & flexibility of bones and muscles

Brisk walking should make you feel a bit warmer, breathe a little faster and make your heart beat faster; you should still be able to talk. If you find that you are getting out of breath, slow down. If you feel dizzy, breathless or in pain then you should consult your doctor before continuing with a walking programme.

For more information on the benefits of walking visit the Walking for Health website.
