Online Mapping Service - Nordmap

Welcome to North Dorset District Council's Online Mapping Service 'Nordmap'. This service is based upon the Council's corporate Geographical Information System (GIS) and provides interactive mapping that allows the user to access a variety of information such as Ordnance Survey base maps and council information layers held by North Dorset District Council. It can be regarded as the computer-based equivalent to a paper map but an important difference is that it is interactive allowing users to move around the maps and query certain layers of mapped information presented. The collections of mapped data layers are known as "Themes" when viewed in Nordmap.

You can use this web site to:

• Find places or properties within the district
• Move around the map and zoom in or out
• Turn map layers on or off and find out useful information about services within the district
• Click on features on the map to find out more information about them
• Use the 'Find my nearest' function to locate different features nearest to a particular point.

How do I use the maps and interactive tools?

Click on the zoom in, zoom out, or pan buttons and then on the map to move around the map. Also the ability to select and navigate to a specific area of the map from an overview of the whole county is provided by the "Overview map" navigation tool.

You can use the "Address Search" facility tab to enter an address and/or postcode to find a location on a map.

To identify any information associated with a mapped object, click the 'Identify All' button (marked "i") and then click on an object shown on any map theme. e.g. clicking on the leisure centre object gives leisure centre name, phone number, web address.

By using the "Find My Nearest" button and then clicking on the map at any North Dorset location you are able to search for a North Dorset facility or council service from the list presented. For example you can then find the nearest recycling facility by selecting from the list and choosing a search distance. If you click on any item in the found list then the map will jump to that location. Remember the search distance you select is in kilometers and displayed results are "as the crow flies" i.e. radial not road mileage.
