North Dorset has a diverse range of building types, styles and many areas with a strong historic character. Good design can help to retain, develop or create local distinctiveness by providing buildings that are pleasant to use, human in scale and sometimes buildings that inspire.

Good architecture should be the aim of all those involved in development and all successful design solutions depend on sufficient time being afforded to a thorough site analysis and careful character appraisal of the context.
