Conservation Areas

What is a Conservation Area?

A Conservation Area can be defined as an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which is desirable to preserve or enhance.

Areas of special architectural or historical interest are an irreplaceable record of our cultural heritage and conservation area designation aims to protect the quality and character of such areas.

North Dorset currently has 45 conservation areas which are made up of unique groups of older buildings, open spaces, gardens (public and Private) and trees.

I live in a Conservation Area - how am I affected?

Planning legislation requires that planning permission must be sought from the Council for certain types of development. The controls are applicable throughout the District, but within a Conservation Area, there is more concern for the protection of its character.
