Do I need planning permission?

This section gives general guidance about the kinds of work for which you need to apply for planning permission and those for which you do not. If you have any queries about a particular development, the first thing to do is to ask the North Dorset District Council’s Development Control Service.  You may also be able to find out more about planning law in your local library.

It is your responsibility for seeking, or not seeking, planning permission. If required, planning permission should be granted before any work begins.

Take Care! If you build something which needs planning permission without obtaining permission first, you may be forced to put things right later, which could prove troublesome and costly. You might even have to remove an unauthorised building. This action is known as Enforcement. You can find out more about Enforcement action by visiting the Enforcement page.

At the start

There are many kinds of development for which you do not need to apply for planning permission. The following guides will help you decide if you need to apply:

Little Shilling, Shaftesbury

Businesses

Farmers

Whether or not you need to apply, you should think about the following before you start work.
