Core Strategy

What is a Core Strategy?

Work has begun on the Core Strategy for North Dorset. The Core Strategy will set out the long term spatial vision and the broad policies that will guide the future development strategy for the District over the next 10 to 20 years. It will look at the general location of new development, how to meet housing needs, community needs, employment issues and infrastructure requirements. The Core Strategy will set the framework for development until 2026. Other documents will be produced to give more details and will have to conform to it. The timetable for the production of these documents is set out in the Local Development Scheme, see link to the right.

Issues and Alternative Options

The first stage in producing the Core Strategy is the Issues and Alternative Options paper, see link to right. This was prepared to ask for comments on the future of the district; the broad locations for housing and other new development, the type of housing required and how the growth can be accommodated whilst protecting the environment.

The issues and options set out in the Paper were developed using the Community Strategy for the County, the Community Plans for the towns in the District, the Regional Spatial Strategy as well as reports such as the Employment Land Review and the Audit of Open Space. We also used the information which came from the Raising Awareness Meetings held in April 2005 and the Core Strategy Focus Group meetings in July 2005. Following these meetings, the First Draft Aims and Objectives for the Core Strategy were drawn up as well as the draft for the vision for the Core Strategy. This work, too, was included in the Paper. To see the reports relating to the early consultation work please use link to the right.

There were also two supporting documents which were prepared specifically to provide evidence for the Issues and Alternative Options Paper. These are The Implications of the Regional Spatial Strategy for the Level and Distribution of Housing Development in North Dorset and Assessment of Settlements Based on Population and Community Facilities. See link to the right.

The informal consultation on the Issues and Alternative Options paper took place between 1st June 2007 and 13th July 2007. This was then extended for one week to 20 July 2007 due to a postal strike taking place on 13th July 2007. The responses were then recorded, analysed and then summarised into two reports: Summary of Main Findings; and, Summary of Informal Consultation Responses. The Summary of Main Findings report does not cover all the comments made and does not seek to provide detail of the responses. The Summary of Main Findings provides an overview of the summary of responses. The Summary of Responses report acts as a guide to the comments made in the detailed responses. Respondents generally responded by providing responses to many issues and options. Therefore the number of responses received was greater than the over all number of respondents that responded. The individual responses are also available to view. Please see links to the right.

The responses from the Issues and Alternative Option consultation document will be taken into consideration when developing the Preferred Options, whilst having regard to national and regional policy and the evidence base.
