Planning Studies
Urban Potential Study
This study investigates the potential of Blandford Forum, Gillingham, Shaftesbury
and Sturminster Newton to accommodate further housing development within their existing settlement boundaries,
during the period 2001-2016. The findings will be used to inform future housing policy in North Dorset.
This document has been produced in response to national planning policy guidance, which establishes
that priority should be given to re-using previously developed land and buildings in preference to the
development of greenfield sites.
Local Development Framework Annual Monitoring Report
2006
The preparation of an Annual Monitoring Report (AMR) is now a statutory requirement
of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. The AMR must assess the implementation of the Local
Development Scheme (LDS) as well as showing how well or not policies of the development plan are being
met. North Dorset District Council have already prepared three AMRs in 2003 , 2004 and 2005. Please

Gillingham Landscapes and Open Spaces Assessment
Report
This report contains an independent survey and assessment of the landscapes and
open spaces of Gillingham. It was undertaken by Richard F Burden (Chartered Landscape Architect) on
behalf of the Council following adoption of the Local Plan. The report will be used to help develop
new policy for open spaces in the town along with work that is currently being undertaken by the Gillingham
Open Spaces Group of the Three Rivers Partnership. The Council has made no commitment to the recommendations
in the report at this stage.
The Audit of Open Space and Assessment of Local
Need
Strategic Leisure Consultants carried out the Audit of Open Space and Assessment
of Local Need, the requirement of PPG17 Open Space. They carried out the work in 2005/6 and additional
play areas were surveyed by council staff in 2006. The Audit and Assessment will provide information
on existing open space as well as being used to project needs for the future. Use link to the right

Employment Land Review
Employment Land Review consultation for the first stage has now
closed, however, any further comments will be considered in the production of the second stage.
In preparing a Local Development Framework (LDF), North Dorset District Council
has the opportunity to develop, with stakeholders and local communities, its aspirations for the District
for the next 20 years to 2026. The Council’s shared vision for the people of North Dorset is “where
thriving and balanced communities in our market towns and surrounding villages build economic prosperity
while safeguarding our unique and diverse environment”
The Council, in reflecting the wider aims of national objectives and its own vision,
is committed to promoting a strong, stable and productive economy that aims to bring jobs and prosperity
to all.
In order to achieve this objective an assessment of the demand for and supply of
land for employment purposes, and the suitability of sites for future employment development will need
to be made. This assessment will influence the safeguarding of the best sites from alternative uses
and will also identify those sites which are no longer suitable for employment development.
The first stage of the Employment Land Review (ELR), the ‘Review of Existing Sites’
was adopted by the Council at the Cabinet meeting held on 22nd March 2007.
