Council Tax Exemptions

Exempt Dwellings

Certain occupied properties will be totally exempt from Council Tax, these are:

  • Properties where all of the occupants are either students, (and in special circumstances their non-British spouses or dependants) or certain school or college leavers.
  • Student halls of residence.
  • Certain properties where all of the residents are severely mentally impaired.
  • Properties where all of the occupants are aged under 18.
  • Armed forces barracks (although occupants will contribute to the cost of local services through a special arrangement).
  • Properties where a member of a Visiting Force, foreign diplomatic mission or a senior official of certain international organisations would otherwise be liable - restricted to main UK residences.
  • Certain granny annexe type accommodation.

Certain unoccupied properties will also be exempt from Council Tax, including those:

Class BPremises owned by a charity that have been unoccupied for less than six months
Class CPremises that have been unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for less than six months
Class DPremises that have been left unoccupied by persons being detained in prison
Class EPremises left unoccupied by person who are in Hospital, Nursing Home or in a Residential Care Home
Class FPremises left unoccupied following the death of the Council Taxpayer
Class GPremises where law prohibits occupation
Class HPremises which are unoccupied but being kept for a Minister of Religion
Class IPremises left unoccupied by persons who reside elsewhere and are receiving care
Class JPremises left unoccupied by persons who reside elsewhere providing care
Class KPremises left unoccupied by students who are residing elsewhere to study
Class LRepossessed premises
Class MHall of Residence
Class NPremises occupied solely by students
Class OBarracks messes and married quarters provided by the Ministry of Defence
Class PPremises occupied by members of Visiting Armed Forces
Class QPremises which are in the hands of a Trustee in Bankruptcy
Class RPitches or moorings where the caravan or houseboat has been removed
Class SPremises occupied solely by persons under 18 years
Class TUnoccupied annexes subject to planning restriction
Class UPremises occupied solely by person(s) who are Severely Mentally Impaired
Class VPremises occupied by Diplomats
Class WAnnexes which are occupied solely by dependant relatives
