My Parents are asking me to leave

North Dorset District Council takes the view that the best place for young people to be living is in the parental home. We will work with both young people and parents to try and achieve a solution which enables a person to leave home but in a gradual and planned manner.

Evicting your child is not an easy option. We will involve Social Services, care and health groups, youth groups and any other relevant organisations including Housing Benefits, if you declare that you are evicting your child. Your benefits may be affected if the number of people living in your home changes. We expect parents to attend interviews and be questioned on why they have to evict their child.  Our first aim is to prevent homelessness where possible.

We aim to work with parents and young people to present different options which may be an answer to the problems being experienced. If a parent or guardian agrees to keep a child at home instead of evicting them then we have a range of services we can access. We will look at different ways of renting privately, different types of accommodation, assist with Housing Benefit applications, access tenancy support for people leaving home for the first time and refer to other specialist organisations who may be able to help.

If a person is evicted by their parents however, then the range of options is more limited. If a person is aged 16-17 and they are evicted by their parents or guardians the Council may have a duty to provide temporary accommodation. This will however be outside the area in an unfamiliar town.  It will probably not be in an area that you would choose and is likely to be bed and breakfast accommodation only. The best place for a person to be is in the parental home not in temporary accommodation.

If you are experiencing problems at home or your parents have told you that you have to leave, contact Housing Services or one of the organisations in the Resources section.

If you are at risk of violence or abuse we will not expect you to return home. It is advisable to contact Housing Services as soon as possible and speak to an advisor.

Please call Housing Advice and Allocations at North Dorset District Council on (01258) 454111 or e-mail us at housingcs@north-dorset.gov.uk for more details of this service.
