Poor quality housing can have an impact on the health of occupants and on the quality of life in an area. It is primarily the responsibility of homeowners to maintain their own property, however the Council also has a responsibility to review the condition of North Dorset’s housing stock and develop appropriate policies to deal with any deficiencies. All homes should provide a safe and healthy environment for any potential occupier or visitor. The Housing Act 2004 has introduced a risk assessment process to identify housing related hazards called the Housing Health and Safety Rating System. More information on the Housing Health and Safety Rating System can be obtained from the document 'HHSRS Guidance for landlords and property related professionals' on the Department for Communities and Local Government web site. The Council is also committed to increasing the proportion of homes in North Dorset that meet the Decent Homes Standard. In addition Houses in Multiple Occupation should achieve additional requirements concerning fire safety and amenity provision. |
