Organics Pilot Recycling Scheme
SORT IT!
Kerbside food and rubbish collection pilot for 6000 homes in the north of the district. North Dorset District Council has been set tough recycling targets by the Government and the new waste collection scheme will help meet our recycling target and avoid heavy financial penalties which would increase council tax. Evaluation of the Pilot Scheme
News - September 2007 - ORGANICS PILOT RECYCLING SCHEME SURVEY RESULTS
Recycling Rate in Pilot Area
Since the scheme was launched in March 2006 we have been monitoring the recycling rate in the pilot area.
Over the period March 2006 to June 2008 64% of the total household waste in area has been recycled/composted.
Before the scheme was launched only 25% of the waste was recycled.
Overall in the pilot area residents generate 23% less waste than those in the rest of the district.
Recycling Rate District Wide
As a direct result of the pilot scheme the council’s district–wide recycling rate is now 36%,(2007/08) compared to 25% before the scheme was launched.
The Council is now exceeding its recycling target of 30%.
Effect of Pilot Scheme on Household Recycling Centre in Shaftesbury
Concerns have been raised by some residents that by limiting the size of the residual waste bins and not collecting side waste we are simply diverting considerable amounts of waste to the County Council run Household Recycling Centre in Shaftesbury.
We have compared the total tonnage of waste received at the site and also the recycling rate at the site over the period April to August 2005/06 and the same period in 2006/07.
The figures show that there has been a small increase in the total waste delivered to the site of 0.76%
The amount recycled/recovered at the site has reduced by 1.77%.
We will continue to monitor the effects of the pilot scheme on the site.
