Organics Pilot Recycling Scheme
SORT IT!
Kerbside food and rubbish collection pilot for 6000 homes in the north of the district. North Dorset District Council has been set tough recycling targets by the Government and the new waste collection scheme will help meet
our recycling target and avoid heavy financial penalties which would increase council tax. Please see links below for more information and to report any problems Also

Organics Pilot Success
News - September 2007 - ORGANICS PILOT RECYCLING SCHEME SURVEY RESULTS
Recycling Rate in Pilot Area
Since the scheme was launched last March we have been monitoring the recycling rate
in the pilot area.
Over the period March to September 2006 65% of the total household
waste in area has been recycled/composted.
Before the scheme was launched only 25% of the waste was recycled.
Recycling Rate District Wide
As a direct result of the pilot scheme the council’s district–wide recycling rate
is now 33%, compared to 25% before the scheme was launched.
The Council is now exceeding its recycling target of 30%.
Effect of Pilot Scheme on Household Recycling Centre
in Shaftesbury
Concerns have been raised by some residents that by limiting the size of the residual
waste bins and not collecting side waste we are simply diverting considerable amounts of waste to the
County Council run Household Recycling Centre in Shaftesbury.
We have compared the total tonnage of waste received at the site and also the recycling
rate at the site over the period April to August 2005/06 and the same period in 2006/07.
The figures show that there has been a small increase in the total waste delivered
to the site of 0.76%
The amount recycled/recovered at the site has reduced by 1.77%.
We will continue to monitor the effects of the pilot scheme on the site.
Evaluation of the Scheme
The council been successful in securing support from WRAP (Waste Resources Action
Programme) to carry out a survey of residents experiences of the scheme.
We will give all residents the opportunity to feedback to us and the survey will
be carried out in coming months. We will keep you updated about when it’s going out.
The feedback will help us develop/improve the scheme and plan how it can be extended
should funds become available in the future.
