Tips to reduce your waste
Other ways to reduce, reuse and
recycle your household waste
Bring banks
North Dorset District Council operates 90 bring bank recycling sites. A variety
of materials can be recycled at these sites including glass, cans, paper & magazines, clothing,
shoes, plastic bottles and aluminium foil. Please contact the Council or visit www.north-dorset.gov.uk
for your nearest bring site.
Household Recycling Centres at Blandford,
Shaftesbury
or Sherborne
Dorset County Council provides recycling centres for glass, cans, paper & magazines,
wood (not painted or treated), all metals, electric cable, garden waste, household batteries, electrical
items, car batteries, used engine oil, furniture, fluorescent light tubes, rubble and hardcore. Please
see www.dorsetforyou.com/waste for more information.
Garden waste
Garden waste can not be collected through the new wheeled bin scheme. It can be
taken to the Household Recycling Centres at Blandford, Shaftesbury or Sherborne and dispose of it free
of charge.
The best thing to do with garden waste is to compost it at home. This is very
easy to do, and it makes a rich compost to help improve your soil. Home compost bins can be purchased
at a heavily subsidised rate through a scheme run jointly by the Dorset Authorities and WRAP. For
details of the offer please click here. How to start home composting
If you would like to dispose of garden waste at the kerbside you
will need to purchase
prepaid additional rubbish sacks from the Council which should be put out for collection next to your
blue bin. (Please note that this waste will be sent to landfill).
