Why Recycling Matters

Recycling makes a positive difference to where you live.  Any rubbish that you don’t recycle or re-use has to be buried or burnt in special facilities.  This is very expensive, causes pollution and harms the environment.

Burying Waste

Most of the UK’s rubbish is buried in landfill sites. These are large holes in the ground which are filled with rubbish then monitored carefully to minimise their impact on the local environment. Landfill sites are filling up quickly and in a few years there wont be any space left.

Burning Waste

Some of the UK’s waste is burnt in specially designed incinerators. This process is becoming more advanced. The heat produced is increasingly being used as a source of energy.

Recycling Waste

Unlike burying and burning rubbish, recycling allows materials to be used again and made into useful products. It can take as little as six weeks to turn the things you recycle into a new product, which can then be bought and recycled again!
