Duty of care

To help combat the blight of flytipping, the waste 'Duty of Care' has been extended to include householders. It is the responsibility of householders to ensure that their waste is only consigned to licensed waste carriers. Anyone using an unlicensed waste carrier to remove bulky waste could be fined up to £5,000.  Waste management is big business and there are many unscrupulous waste carriers who will charge householders to take waste away, only to make vast sums of money dumping it over the nearest hedge. These fly-tippers rely on people not asking questions and not checking for registration.  In the UK last year there were over 500,000 incidents of household waste fly-tipping. The onus is now on the householder to check that the person they are giving their waste to is authorised to take it. Your local council is an authorised waste carrier.

How do I check for authorised waste carriers?

If you are concerned about a waste collector's authorisation, visit the Environment Agency website and enter your postcode or call them on 08708 506506 for an instant 'Waste Carrier Validation Check'. This will give you a list of authorised carriers in your area.

If you have furniture you no longer need which you think could be reused please Use link for charitable organisations that recycling and re-using furniture.
