Spillages on the highway
Refuse Spillage
Refuse spillages are inevitable in a rural district with wildlife and vermin attacking sacks etc.
To reduce the amount of spillages The Council’s policy states that refuse should only be made available for collection from 7.00am on the day of collection and refuse is the responsibility of the householder until the collection day.
It is an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to deposit refuse on the highway prior to the day of collection and this does carry a fine on conviction.
Refuse crews are responsible for clearing any spillages caused during the collection. To report a spillage please contact Customer Contact on the contact details below and we will arrange for the area to be cleared.
Mud On Highway
In a rural district, it would be reasonable to expect some mud on Highways, particularly in areas where farming is a major activity. It is, however, an offence to deposit material on the highway and persons doing so may be liable to prosecution and for the costs incurred in cleaning up. If mud constitutes a danger or obstruction then action may be required to have this nuisance removed. The criterion for attention to address these problems is determined by the severity and location.
This is dealt with by Dorset County Council Highways department. Please contact them to report any instances.
