It is estimated that up to one third of domestic waste is suitable for composting.
When the compost is added to soil it improves the structure and increases the biological activity that
is needed for healthy plants to grow.
North Dorset residents have bought over 10,000 home compost bins since 2000 through
subsidised schemes. Over a third of residents are now composting their garden waste at home. The scheme
which has been running for the last three years is a partnership between the Dorset Authorities and
WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme).
