Oil

Engine Oil

There are three treatment options:

  • Re-refining to produce a new recycled oil, water and a residue.
  • Laundering used to process oil of known composition, such as hydraulic oils and cutting oils; after treatment the oil is returned to the company that supplied it for reuse.
  • Fuel production, which is the most common option and a much simpler process than either re-refining or laundering; it involves removing water and the solid contaminants collected during use.

Domestic

Used oil filters can be crushed and recycled for their oil and metal components.

Used engine oil can be deposited in the oil bank at any Dorset County Council Household Recycling Centres.  The oil is taken away for proper recovery.

More information on waste oil and local recycling points can be obtained from the Environment Agency's 'Oil Care Helpline' on 0800 66 33 66 or visit the Environment Agency Website.

Cooking Oil

Domestic

There are no facilities for recycling cooking oil from the household.  Small quantities should be soaked up into kitchen towel and put in the normal refuse collection.  Larger quantities can cause problems by leaking from the dustcart.  These should only be put in the normal refuse collection if contained in a lidded PET plastic fizzy drinks bottle (these will not burst in the dustcart).  Alternatively it can be poured into a container and taken to any Dorset County Council Household Recycling Centre and put in the general refuse skip.
