Clinical waste
What is clinical waste?
Clinical waste includes waste that, unless made safe, could be hazardous to anyone who comes into contact with it, and that consists wholly or partly of: human or animal tissue; blood or other body fluids; excretions; drugs or other pharmaceutical products; swabs or dressings; or syringes, needles or other sharp instruments.
It also includes any other waste that could infect anyone who comes into contact with it, and that arises from:
- medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practices
- investigation, treatment, care, teaching or research
- collecting blood for transfusion.
Domestic
Sharps, medicines, nappy waste
It is very unusual for householders to need advice about clinical waste - most producers of clinical waste have a support service which includes collection of their waste.
- Sharps (e.g. needles) - local GPs have sharps boxes as do local police stations and East Dorset District Council. You should your local GP or police station directly. East Dorset District Council can be contacted on 01202 886201.
- Nappies/incontinence pads - can be safely disposed of through the normal refuse collection service.
- Out of date medicines etc. - local chemists will accept out-of-date medicines for proper disposal.
- Other household generated clinical waste - residents should contact the hospital for advice.
