Low Cost Home Ownership

There are a range of options that are available from time to time to help people who cannot afford to buy a home suitable for their housing needs at the moment. There have been a number of names used for these schese over the years but they have all be redefined and marketed under the 'HomeBuy' label.

The promotion and marketing of any schemes in the North Dorset area is now carried out by the 'HomeBuy Agents'. Contact details and information on schemes in the area are available on their website or from

HomeBuy agents are appointed by the Government to provide access to ownership schemes, and act as the first point of contact for information on affordable home ownership schemes in the area.

Please note that you must be registered on this Council's waiting list to be eligible to be nominated for any of the Low Cost Home Ownership schemes in the North Dorset area.

The Council no longer operates its own Low Cost Market Housing Scheme.

Other Schemes

Housing association and local authority tenants also have other means of buying the home they currently live in:

  • See Right to Acquire for housing association tenants
  • Right to Buy, or Preserved Right to Buy, for tenants of council properties or those that have been transterred from a local authority to a housing associate.

To check whether you are eligible for any of these schemes you should contact your landlord.

Fro more information about the different types of HomeBuy schemes, please read the national government website.

Please call Housing Advice and Allocations at North Dorset District Council on (01258) 454111 or e-mail us at housingcs@north-dorset.gov.uk for more details of this service.
