Regional Spatial Strategy

The Regional Planning Guidance for the South West (RPG10) which looks ahead to 2016 is the current advice available at regional level. Under the new planning regime this advice has been elevated in status to a 'Regional Spatial Strategy'. The South West Regional Assembly (SWRA) is currently working on a review of this strategy. The draft replacement Regional Spatial Strategy (draft RSS) which looks ahead to 2026 was published for consultation over a 12 week period between 6th June and 30th August 2006. Responses were considered by a panel of independent Planning Inspectors at an Examination in Public, held from 17th April to 6th July 2007 in Exeter.

The draft RSS was considered by the Council's Cabinet on 17th August 2006 and a number of responses were made. These responses can be downloaded from the link to the right.

In late 2006 the SWRA asked the 'strategic planning authorities' in different parts of the region to examine how higher levels of growth could be accommodated in the region. The 'strategic planning authorities' in Dorset submitted their advice in December 2006. This can be downloaded via link to the right.

This advice put forward a 'preferred approach' to meeting higher levels of growth, one element of which was the major expansion of Gillingham. This issue was considered by the Council's Planning Policy Panel on 12th February 2007 and Cabinet on 1st March 2007 (see the 'minutes and agendas' section of the website for these reports). The Council has also produced a brief summary of the facts relating to this issue, this can be downloaded using link to the right.

The Council attend the Examination in Public in June to contribute to the discussions relating to growth in the Bournemouth/Poole and South Somerset Housing Market Areas (HMA's) which cover the District. The Council has submitted further written evidence on these issues, please use links to the right to download the documents.

The Panel report on the Examination in Public into the Draft Regional Spatial Strategy was published in January 2008. It can be downloaded using the link to the right.

This was submitted to the Secretary of State who has now published her proposed changes for a period of consultation ending at 5pm on Friday 24th October. The Council’s response can be found under the Cabinet Agenda and Minutes for 8th September 2008. Please see link to the right.
