Single Person Discount

Where a single adult has their sole or main residence within the chargeable dwelling

This must be confirmed in writing by the chargepayer before any discount can be awarded or a discount form can be issued by contacting the Billing Authority.

Has there been a change in the occupation of the property e.g. vacation of a person?

Yes – Please confirm who has vacated the dwelling, why they have vacated, from what date and what their forwarding address is. This can be confirmed in writing to the Billing Authority.

No - A single discount form can be sent by the Billing Authority. Once it is received back the account will be updated and a revised account will be issued. Until the revised account has been received all instalments should be made as per your current account.

Was the person who has vacated – named as liable for Council Tax?

Yes – the joint account will be closed from the date the person vacated and a new account will be opened in the sole person’s name. If the old account is in credit, the local taxation team will send out a credit note letter to all parties as we need joint agreement in regarding how to handle the overpayment. A single discount form can be sent by the Billing Authority. Once it is received back the account will be updated and a revised account will be issued.

Cancellation of single person discount

If your circumstances change and you are no longer the sole adult resident in the property, you can inform the Council over the telephone or counter or by writing to the Billing Authority

An adult moving into the dwelling

Full details of the person moving in such as full name, previous address, date they moved in and their relationship with chargepayer e.g. new partner, lodger.

Son/daughter becomes 18 years old

Full details of the person such as full name, date of birth, previous address, and date they moved in(if appropriate).
