SmokeStop in North Dorset
It is estimated that on average around 70% of current smokers either want to stop or have thought about stopping in the past. If you are one of those, then help is at hand thanks to courses run by Dorset SmokeStop.
The SmokeStop scheme is organised by the North Dorset Primary Care Trust, and gives smokers practical advice and support to help them quit the habit and stay smoke-free. Last year alone the scheme helped around 700 people in Dorset successfully give up.
Courses take place across the county in easy to reach locations – such as schools, doctors surgeries, community centres or even places of work - and are completely free of charge. Alternatively if there are not enough people in your area that want to quit we can organise one-to-one sessions.
During a course – which consists of 7 weekly sessions - the SmokeStop tutors give people information on issues such as how to best deal with quitting, how stopping will affect your body and advice on other assistance available such as nicotine replacement treatment. All the information that we give out is evidence based – so attendees can be sure they are getting the most up to date and qualified support around.
So why give up?
Everyone is aware that smoking can lead to a greater risk of serious illness such as Lung Cancer and Heart disease – in fact around 120,000 people die each year as a direct result of their habit. But it’s not just your health that will benefit from quitting.
Parents who smoke should be aware that their children may become ill as a result of breathing in airborne tobacco smoke. Furthermore, children of smokers are more likely to take up the habit themselves because they copy the behaviour of adults and will perceive smoking as the norm if they grow up in a household where adults smoke.
Your wallet will benefit too, as based on current prices, a 20 a day smoker will spend over £31,000 on cigarettes in the next 20 years. That’s roughly the price of a brand new Porsche !.
