Sowing Seeds - Local Action Bid
'Local Action for Rural Communities' is a community-led initiative offering EU funding through the Regional Development Agency. Local Action Groups (LAGs) will be formed to include representatives from the community who will decide how the funding will be spent within the aims and objectives of the programme.
The aim of Local Action is to enable rural communities to diversify and strengthen their local economy and to improve the quality of life for people living in those communities. It is all about how to use our beautiful environment to generate added economic value.
The core objectives of Local Action are:
- Addressing economic under performance.
- Improving provision and access to services as a means of tackling disadvantage.
- Harnessing wider economic value from sustainable environmental quality.
- Developing local governance and delivery capacity in rural areas.
Within the South-West region there is a budget of £28 million for Local Action until end December 2013. A local bid proposal, ‘Sowing SEEDS’ has been submitted and we should know whether or not this has been successful by the end of July 2008. The bidding process is highly competitive. The local bid is a collaborative effort between Community Partnerships Executive North Dorset (CPEND) and Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has four strategic objectives and one cross cutting one. These are:
- Supporting rural businesses
- Enhancing the environment
- Empowering young People
Developing opportunities for Local Culture and Heritage (cross cutting objective)
- Sustaining Local Communities
