Sturminster Newton

Sturminster Mill

Sturminster Newton is a market town in the heart of the Blackmore Vale and is a community steeped in history and tradition. Although the town retails its rural Dorset charm (indeed many family names go back centuries), it is also a place that is rapidly expanding and diversifying to meet the demands and expectations modern living encompasses.

The Market Charter was granted 700 years ago but although the Livestock Market ceased in June 1997 the town still continues its traditional Monday Market established for many years. There is a Pannier and Car Boot Market on a Saturday. The monthly Farmers’ Market sells food traditionally produced in the ‘Vale’ and attracts people from far and wide.

The well managed River Stour running parallel to the Town attracts fishermen from throughout the area and the beautiful unspoilt countryside with its abundance of flora and wildlife, offers a stunning environment for walkers, cyclists and country lovers alike. Indeed such is the amount of rural and traditional craft that form much of the history of the area that the Town boasts offices for the Countryside Rangers and Dorset Coppice Group as well as an abundance of countryside interest groups.

The ‘small industry’ expansion and housing development has encouraged people to move into ‘Stur’ to raise families which brings an added vibrancy; equally,  many people are choosing to retire to the area to embrace the diversity that Sturminster has to offer. There are many clubs and societies catering for all interests.

Not a town to ignore our European friends, Sturminster is twinned with Montebourg in France and many people have enjoyed hospitality and friendship each side of the Channel since September 1994.
